CarbonCure Announces Interim Leader as Founding CEO Steps Down

The carbon utilization technology company embarks on a new chapter led by Interim CEO Kristal Kaye while founder Robert Niven will continue to champion CarbonCure on its Board.

Halifax, Nova Scotia, June 2, 2025 — CarbonCure Technologies announced today the appointment of Kristal Kaye as Interim Chief Executive Officer. Kaye had previously served as the company’s Chief Financial Officer and, in that capacity, has already been deeply engaged with CarbonCure’s team, strategy and day-to-day operations. Kaye’s appointment comes as CarbonCure’s founder, Robert Niven, steps away from the CEO role. Niven will remain a strong supporter of CarbonCure, continuing to serve on the company’s Board of Directors.

“Everyone at CarbonCure feels deep gratitude to Rob for his pioneering carbon utilization innovation for lower carbon concrete and his tireless dedication to CarbonCure over the past 13 years, with many years of research and development before that,” Kaye said. “Stepping into this interim role, I am eager to carry Rob’s legacy forward, and our entire team remains committed to that mission, our core values and the success of our concrete producer partners around the world.”

Niven founded the company in 2012 with the simple goal of making concrete sustainability both profitable and easy for the industry. By adopting CarbonCure’s technologies, concrete producers can unlock new revenue streams and cut cement costs. The easy-to-integrate drop-in solution harnesses the proven power of CO₂ mineralization to improve cement efficiency and generate high integrity, high value carbon credits that are purchased by corporate buyers in the voluntary carbon market.

"Founding and leading CarbonCure has been the honour of a lifetime, and I’m immensely proud of what we’ve achieved together over the past 13 years,” Niven said. “From our award-winning innovations and strong industry partnerships to our lasting climate impact, none of it would have been possible without the extraordinary talent, passion and dedication of our team. Stepping back from day-to-day leadership of a company I love—one that has shaped so much of my life and career—was not an easy decision. But I’m very glad to continue serving on CarbonCure’s Board and supporting its ongoing success with full confidence in Kristal’s leadership."

Under Niven’s leadership, CarbonCure developed and commercialized the most widely deployed carbon utilization solution for lower carbon concrete manufacturing. Over the past decade, CarbonCure has licensed hundreds of its carbon dioxide injection systems to concrete producers across more than two dozen countries, permanently mineralizing and reducing nearly 600,000 metric tons of CO2 while supplying 8.8 millions of truckloads of CarbonCure concrete.

With more than three decades of experience and 22 years of executive leadership across a variety of industries, including mining, energy and retail pharmacy, Kaye brings to the Interim CEO position extensive experience in corporate strategy and financial management and a fresh perspective on the company’s near-term priorities.

“Kristal has the complete support of CarbonCure’s Board of Directors, with confidence that she will be a strong and steady chief executive, keeping the company focused and reaching new milestones,” said Board member William Holden. “As CarbonCure begins a new phase, we are all profoundly grateful to Rob for his extraordinary vision in transforming his scientific concept into proven innovation and then commercial impact across the industry. Thanks to this solid foundation, a talented team and clear momentum, CarbonCure is well positioned for continued growth and tremendous impact in the years ahead.”
