Carbon Removal with CarbonCure Concrete: A Permanent Storage Solution

We know that we must remove carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere and store it permanently to have a chance at curbing climate change. We also understand that corporations and governments pursuing net zero targets want their carbon removal investments to make the biggest possible impact.

Our solution takes concrete, the most abundant man-made material in the world, and transforms this major driver of emissions into a valuable—and uniquely durable—carbon sink.

A Permanent Solution

CarbonCure’s retrofit technologies inject a precise dose of CO2 into fresh concrete. This CO2 chemically converts into solid minerals with the same composition as limestone or seashells. Like geologic sequestration, CarbonCure’s carbon mineralization technologies effectively turn CO₂ into rock.

The injected CO₂ reacts with calcium ions from cement to form a nano-size mineral called calcium carbonate. The calcium carbonate becomes embedded in the concrete and protects the concrete's strength - allowing CarbonCure’s concrete producer partners to significantly and safely reduce the amount of carbon-intensive cement in each truckload of concrete, without compromising the quality of their product.

CarbonCure injects captured carbon dioxide into concrete during mixing, where the CO₂ chemically converts into a mineral and becomes permanently embedded.

Forever Means Forever

Carbon mineralization does not trap bubbles of gaseous CO₂ inside concrete walls. Instead, CO₂ becomes embedded in the concrete like rock and removed from the atmosphere—for millennia. This carbon mineralization ensures permanent carbon sequestration, so the CO2 will never be released. It stays mineralized even if the concrete is eventually demolished or crushed.

Unlike other carbon removal pathways, the CO2 that CarbonCure permanently stores in concrete cannot leak, resurface, or burn down in a fire. And because the CO2 is immediately mineralized, ongoing monitoring isn’t necessary, providing cost savings.

The Permanence of Concrete

Concrete is the most abundant building material on Earth and the literal foundation of our society—in homes, schools, hospitals, roads, and bridges. Everywhere you look, walk and drive, you are surrounded by concrete.

Roman structures still stand today thanks to concrete’s strength, durability, and versatility. Because of those attributes, concrete is not going anywhere. Builders will be working with it for decades to come.

Concrete’s longevity and capacity for carbon mineralization makes it an effective, practical, and permanent carbon sink.

We're on a Mission

CarbonCure’s mission is to deploy our suite of carbon mineralization technologies to annually remove and reduce 500 million metric tons of CO₂ emissions by 2030—equivalent to taking 100 million cars off the road each year. And we have a proven way to make this happen. Read our verified methodology

Corporations and governments searching for high-quality carbon removal credits to compensate for their hard-to-abate CO2 emissions can rest assured: CarbonCure’s technologies offer durable carbon storage with a meaningful climate impact, today and for generations to come.
