CarbonCure Signs The Climate Pledge

CarbonCure recently became a signatory of The Climate Pledge. We are honored to stand with Amazon, Global Optimism and our fellow signatories in a commitment to being net zero carbon by 2040 at the latest—ten years ahead of The Paris Agreement. CarbonCure achieved carbon neutrality in 2020 through emissions reductions, offsets and carbon removal purchases from other start-ups in the carbon removal field. We are now committed to reaching net zero.

Notably, CarbonCure is among the first The Climate Pledge Fund portfolio companies to become a signatory of the Pledge. This demonstrates the power of the Fund to drive innovation and propel portfolio companies to have a true impact on climate change.

What is The Climate Pledge?

The Climate Pledge was co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism in 2019 and is a commitment to net zero carbon by 2040. It consists of a growing cross-sector community of companies and organizations, working together to crack the climate crisis and solve the challenges of decarbonizing our economy.

Companies and organizations that sign the Pledge commit to three areas of action:

  • Measure and report greenhouse gas emissions on a regular basis,
  • Implement decarbonization strategies in line with the Paris Agreement through real business changes and innovations, including efficiency improvements, renewable energy, materials reductions, and other carbon emission elimination strategies, and
  • Neutralize any remaining emissions with additional, quantifiable, real, permanent, and socially-beneficial offsets to achieve net zero annual carbon emissions by 2040.

CarbonCure’s Climate Action

CarbonCure is committed to each of the three scopes outlined in The Climate Pledge. Our long-term vision is to support the complete decarbonization of the concrete manufacturing process. Here are some of the ways we plan to do that:

1. Scaling our technologies

With our carbon removal technologies installed across a wide network of concrete plants around the world, we’re on a mission to reduce and remove 500 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually—that’s equivalent to taking 100 million cars off the road each year!

We have made great progress on our journey so far. Our carbon mineralization technology is now in use at more than 400 concrete plants across four continents and, to date, we have saved 120,000 tonnes of embodied carbon from the built environment. But in order to make a real difference in the fight against climate change, we know we can’t act fast enough if we only act alone. As a Pledge signatory, we’re excited to join other mission-aligned companies to more rapidly scale our impact.

2. Continuous product innovation

CarbonCure’s innovation strategy outlines a thoughtful technology roadmap that will deliver a suite of carbon removal technologies over the next 10 years. These innovations will build on CarbonCure’s scientific expertise and currently available innovation—like our carbon mineralization technologies used by hundreds of concrete producers around the world and our XPRIZE-winning technology to treat reclaimed water—to create even more new solutions that successfully use CO2 in the concrete value chain. CarbonCure is also exploring alternative carbon dioxide sources and digital solutions to advance its product roadmap.

3. Carbon dioxide removal credit program

CarbonCure recently launched a carbon dioxide removal credit program, with a verified methodology focused on measurability, additionality and permanence. We collaborated with Verra, the world’s leading voluntary greenhouse gas program, to ensure that we translated our process into a unique, high-quality carbon credit offering as part of its Verified Carbon Standard (“VCS”) Program. CarbonCure is proud that our carbon removal credit program program opens the door for companies to achieve their own climate goals while also accelerating the decarbonization of the concrete sector.

4. Investment in other climate solutions

As a leading climate tech company, winner of the Carbon XPRIZE and a Pledge signatory on our own path to net zero, we strive to support the development and deployment of innovations across the emerging field of carbon removal. Because we know firsthand the catalytic impact of carbon credit purchases, we are proud to invest in a diverse portfolio of other carbon removal companies.

By joining The Climate Pledge, we are reinforcing our commitment to sustainability, and we’re excited to join a community that will exchange knowledge, ideas and best practices. We look forward to working with all of The Climate Pledge signatories on this critical mission.
