CarbonCure Celebrates 500 Carbon Mineralization Systems, Two Million Truckloads of Sustainable Concrete

Carbon XPRIZE-winning climate tech company marks several milestones this month on its path to annually saving 500 million metric tons of carbon dioxide during concrete production

HALIFAX, NS, December 16, 2021 — CarbonCure Technologies, a climate tech company that provides a suite of carbon dioxide removal technologies to the concrete industry, has announced a milestone, 500th system sold to one of its visionary concrete producer partners. Just five years after commercializing, CarbonCure will soon install this 500th system at the family-owned Don Chapin Company in Salinas, California, part of a three-plant rollout of CarbonCure Ready Mix.

“We’re truly honored that we will soon operate CarbonCure’s 500th carbon mineralization system in the world. Our partnership with CarbonCure demonstrates our commitment to delivering a greener concrete product to our customers across the Tri-County Area,” said Don Chapin, Jr., President at the Don Chapin Company. “We’re ready to roll up our sleeves and begin using CarbonCure to build a more sustainable environment for future generations."

The key milestone for CarbonCure was reached in the same week that the company celebrated another major benchmark: two million truckloads of low carbon concrete made by its producer partners using its technologies. Nearly one million of those truckloads were delivered in 2021 alone. According to CarbonCure’s real-time data from its network of systems, the two millionth truckload was produced in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina by industry leader Thomas Concrete, which has installed CarbonCure’s carbon mineralization tech across 50 plants.

“Thomas Concrete was proud to be an early adopter of CarbonCure in 2016. And we are tremendously proud to have produced its two millionth truckload of sustainable concrete,” said Alan Wessel, CEO and President of Thomas Concrete. “At Thomas, we believe in doing the right thingfor our communities and for our environmentand in our strong partnership with CarbonCure, we look forward to many more milestones to come.”

Founded in Nova Scotia, Canada in 2012, CarbonCure’s long-term vision is to support the complete decarbonization of the concrete manufacturing process through continued innovation and rapid scaling of its suite of carbon mineralization solutions. Year over year, CarbonCure’s output of sustainable concrete increased 91%, with the surging adoption and usage of its technologies across the industry.

“These major milestones, and their increasing frequency, are clear indicators that CarbonCure is scaling rapidly and making tremendous progress toward our ultimate goal to reduce and remove 500 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually by 2030,” said CarbonCure Chair and CEO Rob Niven. “Looking back, 2021 has been a banner year for CarbonCure. We’re grateful to have such innovative partners. And I am very excited for what’s ahead in 2022.”

In April, CarbonCure was named a grand-prize winner of the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE. The company is now entering a period of hyper-growth following the launch of several new technologies—including CarbonCure Precast and CarbonCure Reclaimed Water—on top of entry into new markets around the world.

Today, the company’s carbon removal technologies have been used in more than 15.5 million cubic yards (11.9 million cubic meters) of concrete to date—equivalent to building the Hoover Dam 4.5 times or the Pentagon 35 times. As a result, CarbonCure’s technologies have saved more than 132,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide to date. This is equal to the annual CO2 emissions from 28,750 cars—equivalent to every ticket holder at a New York Giants home game leaving a car parked at MetLife Stadium for a full year.

Key CarbonCure Milestones by the Numbers:

  • 500 systems licensed to concrete plants around the world
  • 2 million truckloads of concrete made with CarbonCure delivered to date
  • Nearly 1 million truckloads delivered in a year
  • 100,000 truckloads delivered in a month
  • 15.5 million yd3 (11.9 million m3) of concrete produced to date—a 91% increase from Dec. 2020
  • 132,000 metric tons of CO2 saved to date—equal to the annual emissions from 28,750 cars
