Embodied Carbon Challenge
Buildings generate nearly 40% of annual global greenhouse gas emissions, and the world’s building stock is expected to double by 2060. That’s equivalent to building a new New York City every month!
In order to shrink the carbon footprint of buildings, embodied carbon in new buildings must be reduced. Embodied carbon, or the carbon emitted from the manufacturing of building materials and construction, will account for nearly 50% of carbon emissions from new construction between now and 2050. In any given building, concrete can contribute a minimum of 50% of the embodied carbon footprint.

CarbonCure’s innovative solution is a direct way to reduce embodied carbon. The technologies are easily installed in concrete plants and enable concrete producers to inject captured CO₂ into fresh concrete during mixing. Immediately, the injected CO₂ reacts with the concrete mix and becomes a nano-sized mineral that is permanently embedded across the material. Best of all, the CO₂ mineralization enables reductions of carbon-heavy and costly cement in each truckload of concrete, resulting in both economic and environmental benefits—truly a win-win solution.
