CarbonCure Celebrates its Middle East Expansion at the Make It In The Emirates Forum

The carbon utilization company is deploying its technologies for lower carbon concrete to multiple concrete plants in the UAE.

Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada & Abu Dhabi, UAE, May 29, 2023 — CarbonCure Technologies, the global leader in carbon utilization technologies for the concrete industry, announced its entry into the fast-growing United Arab Emirates construction market during a ceremonial signing event alongside its newest Emirati concrete producer partners at the third annual Make It In The Emirates Forum. The event was hosted by the UAE’s Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT).

CarbonCure is currently operating or installing its carbon utilization systems at multiple concrete plants in Abu Dhabi and Dubai in collaboration with local concrete industry partners, including Emirates Beton Ready Mix and Tremix, as well as industrial gas supplier Gulf Cryo

CarbonCure Technologies, Emirates Beton Ready Mix, Tremix, Gulf Cryo and the UAE's Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology participate in a signing ceremony at the 2024 Make It In The Emirates Forum.

"We are immensely proud to bring our solution for high quality, lower carbon concrete to the Emirati market, making a positive impact on the environment and advancing sustainability in the construction sector. Targeting embodied carbon is especially crucial as the UAE and the entire Middle East region experiences rapid development and urban growth," said Robert Niven, CEO and founder of CarbonCure Technologies.

“Attending COP 28 in Dubai in December, I was delighted to see H E Abdulla Al Shamsi and Minister François-Philippe Champagne announce UAE and Canada as co-leads of the Cement and Concrete Breakthrough initiative, leading governments around the world to prioritize concrete decarbonization” Niven added. “As a Canadian company, CarbonCure is proud to be contributing to that initiative in the UAE and beyond. We are grateful for the strong support of the Emirati Ministry of Industry & Advanced Technology and we applaud our Emirati producer partners for their embrace of innovation and commitment to sustainability.”

CarbonCure’s technology portfolio seamlessly integrates into concrete production, mineralizing captured carbon dioxide and reducing the carbon footprint of concrete without compromising its quality, strength or durability. Its climate solution enables a more efficient use of cement by CarbonCure’s growing global network of industry partners, resulting in a more sustainable concrete product that meets the surging demand for lower carbon building materials in both private sector and government procurement.

Organized by MoIAT and taking place at the Abu Dhabi Energy Center, the Make It In The Emirates Forum brings together government and private sector leaders, investors, entrepreneurs and startups – with the primary goal of showcasing investment opportunities within the Emirati industrial sector.

Emirates Beton adopted CarbonCure Ready Mix technology in 2022. It has a system operating today in Abu Dhabi. Meanwhile, Tremix adopted CarbonCure earlier this year, with two systems set to be installed.

CarbonCure's valve box, attached to a Gulf Cryo tank in Abu Dhabi, precisely injects captured CO2 into concrete as it is mixed, producing the same, high quality concrete mixes but with a lower carbon footprint.

"The CarbonCure team shares our vision for a more sustainable future and we are enthusiastic about the opportunity to deploy this carbon mineralization solution and build the UAE with more sustainable, reliable concrete products,” said Osama Hamad, Emirates Beton Ready Mix Group General Manager. “CarbonCure concrete is available today. And we look forward to collaborating with developers, designers and builders in the region to leverage this innovation and advance greener Emirati construction.”

"At Tremix, we are dedicated to reducing embodied carbon in our production processes while upholding the exceptional quality of concrete that our customers depend on. The integration of CarbonCure Technologies signifies a substantial advancement in our sustainability efforts, promoting carbon utilization and propelling environmentally responsible concrete manufacturing," stated Omar Adi, Technical Manager at Tremix.

To date, CarbonCure’s technologies have already been used by hundreds of concrete producers across more than two dozen countries around the world to produce more than six million truckloads of lower carbon concrete, saving more than 439,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide, the equivalent to taking more than 104,000 gas-powered cars off the road for a year. Notable reference projects include Amazon’s HQ2 near Washington, D.C., the 47-story highrise 300 North Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago and the Surbana Jurong Campus, a large office park and industrial complex in Singapore.

At the 2024 Make It In The Emirates Forum, CarbonCure and its Emirati partners celebrate the adoption of CarbonCure's carbon utilization technologies in the UAE.
